Discover “Wild Life”: An Artistic Exploration of Memory and Joy

If you’re looking for an art exhibition that delves deep into the delicate interplay between memory, creativity, and personal experience, look no further. We’re thrilled to announce the opening of “Wild. Life.” a captivating new exhibition by acclaimed artist Emma Ward, set to open on August 17th at the Long Gallery.

Artist, Emma Ward

Experience a Change of Narrative Around Memory Loss

“Wild Life” is more than just an art exhibition—it’s a heartfelt journey inspired by Emma Ward’s personal experiences with a loved one battling dementia. The artist shares, “This exhibition has really been inspired by my personal journey with a family member with dementia. My dad had a heart attack about seven years ago, and during that time, he experienced what is known as sundowners—for him it came as hallucinations in the hospital.”

Among the many touching moments that shaped this exhibition is a vivid memory of an unexpected encounter with joy. Emma recounts, “Despite the trauma, there was a touching moment when my dad, in a very severe hospital room, described a colourful gecko climbing up the wall. We spent an hour laughing at this invisible gecko, finding joy amid the hardship. It’s a memory I cherish.”

In creating “Wild. Life.” Emma sought to offer visitors a chance to explore and celebrate the worlds in between—where forgotten memories resurface and family life is honored. The exhibition features a menagerie of fantastical creatures and vibrant artworks designed to spark smiles and foster connections, even for those experiencing memory loss or cognitive impairment.

This exhibition aims to shift the narrative around memory loss, focusing on positivity and creativity as a means to celebrate the resilience and joy that can emerge from challenging times.
